(12.31.09) Moments Uncaptured

This year, I captured a plethora of dramatic moments with my camera--graduation, moves, Zion, the Tetons, the Bighorns, and Captain Viper amongst them. But what did I miss? Why did I pass by these photo opportunities? Shyness? Laziness? Forgetfulness? Fear of failure? Certainty that I would be unable to capture the grandeur of the moment? A hesitancy to disturb a sacred moment? All of the above.

(12.30.09) Vermiculture

Sara's son, Quinn, made her a beautiful compost bin for Christmas. I spent some time researching the basics of vermiculture (a composting system that employs worms to break down organic material) for Sara. Interested in vermiculture or home composting? Visit THIS site.

(12.29.09) Airports: Our Homage to Industrialization

On my way to visit my wonderful friend Sara (and her similarly awesome family members), it struck me that airports are the ultimate temple of industrialization. In these transportation hubs, we celebrate humanity's engineering achievements more subliminally than anywhere else.

(12.28.09) Connection

(12.27.09) Oh River Mountain Hell

In keeping with family tradition, we played several games of [you pick the name: Oh Hell/Up the River down the River/ Up the Mountain Down the Mountain/ Estimation Whist]. I don't tend to have any particular skill at this card game, but I made a personal high score of 220. Granddad still beat me with 250 points! This picture also demonstrates the meticulous scoring system of Robert W. Chandler.

(12.26.09) Ruins

I have enjoyed exploring the ruins and grounds of Rockwood Hall, a former Rockefeller estate.
I also can't quite figure out how to best crop this image.

(12.24.09) mmm....cookies....mmm

My great-grandmother's jam thumb-print cookies were resurrected today, with much success. I didn't help out, but I led the taste-testing committee.

(12.22.09) Thanks Mom!

I got these in the mail today. My wonderfully creative mother used cookie cutters to make fabric tree ornaments for me. I hope that one day I will be as resourcefully artistic as she is.

(12.21.09) Home

"And the world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles, no matter how long, but only by a spiritual journey, a journey of one inch, very arduous and humbling and joyful, by which we arrive at the ground at our feet, and learn to be at home." Wendell Berry

(12.20.09) Desert Gothic

Fletcher and Jeremie like working on the fence. Really.

(12.19.09) And a Yoohoo!

My first Yoohoo, a gift from Stephen.

(12.18.09) Something's Not Right

Frustrations with the pionjars are escalating with each tour. Ursula was out of commission for the entirety of our most recent tour. After some finicky behavior on Cruella's part, we opened her up to find this screw completely displaced within the exhaust system. Unable to fix this in the field, we resorted once again to hand digging bedrock.

An anthology of ghost stories involving spirit possession of the pionjars is beginning to take shape within the crew.

(12.17.09) Don't Stop the Music

The coveted gift of our crew White Elephant gift exchange was a set of iPod speakers. Thanks to these, we are rockin' it out here at Club Fence.

(12.16.09) Mischief

Fletcher.

(12.15.09) Surprise Jewelry

I won this pretty bracelet when my head made friends with a digging bar (think 20 lb, five foot nail). You can laugh if you like. I did once the nausea and dizziness subsided.

(12.14.09) Friends for the Journey

When we started walking around that track,
All those years ago,
Did you know that we'd still be walking together today?
I did not.
I could not have dreamt it.

We've hiked across continents and conundrums
Our pace ranges from ambling to running,
The terrain is smooth and steep, rocky in places.
We get lost occasionally.

Hakuna matata. Because we're friends for the journey.
We decided that years ago, on a dark walk around that track.

To my dear friends for the journey, across the blogosphere and the world: I love you.
