(7.16.10) Bristlecone Pine Trees

The Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) is an alpine pine species known to be among the oldest non-clonal organisms known to man. In 1964, a research student cut down a bristlecone pine and the tree turned out to be 4900 years old--the oldest living organism! Oh science, how you hurt us sometimes. But I digress. Bristlecones are wizened trees, twisted and gnarled by years of pressures from every direction. Groves of bristlecones are rare, but Great Basin National Park boasts several.
