Eli's favorite color is red.
I don't think he really understands the implications.
To him it means that he buys mandarin red Keens
And races red Matchbox cars.
He insists that no one else can claim red as their favorite color.
But I try.
For me what began as a passing fancy now has layers of meaning.
Red is the color of life, the hue the courses through our veins.
Red signals conclusion, as in autumn leaves.
Red warns us of death, when we see too much of it.
Even when red is absent, we notice that too.
Eli is right about one thing.
Red is a great color.
But he can't have it all.
Because red is the color of life.
