The Perps: The many pressures placed on desert tortoises in the Vegas Valley include development, climate change, increases in predator populations, and garbage interfering with access to burrows. Desert tortoises also suffer from the rising numbers of recreationalists found within their habitat. Individuals range in size from an inch to 15 inches. A juvenile can easily be crushed beneath the wheels of a motorcycle or truck. Wild desert tortoises are at risk to acquire Upper Respiratory Syndrome from released pet tortoises. The water loss from a turtle cold will be fatal to the affected individual.
