Light pollution from Las Vegas (almost an hour away) is a significant issue in this region. Even Death Valley suffers from a blighted sky. This picture was taken about 2 hours after sunset with a 10 second exposure. If you look closely just to the right of the first bush from the left, you can see the search light of the Luxor Casino.
