For education this week, geologist Russ Dyer, his wife Carol, and their dogs ventured out to the fence line to teach us some rudimentary geology. Nevada, Russ claims, is a geologists dream. The absence of abundant biotic material which mask geological structures allow even the beginning rock fiend to identify geologic principles at work. It doesn't hurt that Nevada is the most mountainous state in the US, boasting 13 mountain ranges. What we lack in trees, we make up for in majestic mountaintops.
Addendum (2.5.10): Here is photographic evidence of the nature of Nevada's mountains. Ironically, I took this from the slopes of Mount Charleston (elev. 11,912 ft) which boasts at least four types of pines and is covered with 3 feet of snow at the moment. This certainly is a state of contrasts.
